This course is intended for students, pre-service teachers, and educators interested in integrating cinematic materials into English language teaching. The course focuses on the pedagogical use of films, TV series, documentaries, animated films, trailers, and other audiovisual resources in developing language skills and communicative competence.
The main goal of the course is to develop participants’ confidence, creativity, and professional competence in using cinematic materials as an innovative teaching tool in English language education. Participants will learn how to select appropriate audiovisual materials, design engaging film-based activities, and integrate cinematic resources effectively into lesson planning and classroom practice.
The course follows a thematic structure and consists of 5 modules, each containing 6 units focused on different aspects of cinematic materials in English language teaching. Each module combines theoretical knowledge with practical classroom application and includes a variety of pre-viewing, while-viewing, post-viewing, comprehension, discussion, vocabulary, and communicative tasks designed to develop learners’ language skills and critical thinking abilities.
The course combines theoretical foundations with practical applications and aims to enhance participants’ professional communicative and methodological skills through the development of listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar, cultural awareness, and critical thinking.
Throughout the course, participants will explore the pedagogical value of cinematic materials, examine different types of audiovisual resources, and learn strategies for adapting films to different learner needs and proficiency levels. Special attention is given to communicative competence, authentic language input, student motivation, interaction, and the use of subtitles in language learning.
The course also focuses on designing effective pre-viewing, while-viewing, and post-viewing activities, structuring film-based lessons, assessing learning outcomes, and integrating cinematic materials into modern English language teaching practice.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- understand the pedagogical role of cinematic materials in ELT;
- select suitable films and audiovisual resources for different teaching contexts;
- develop engaging film-based classroom activities;
- use films to improve listening, speaking, vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills;
- promote communicative competence and student interaction through discussion and collaborative tasks;
- adapt cinematic materials for different learner levels and educational goals;
- evaluate student motivation and learning outcomes in film-based instruction;
- create complete film-based lesson plans and apply them in real teaching situations.
The course is designed using authentic and up-to-date materials and can be used both for independent study and instructor-led practical sessions. Its flexible structure allows participants to gradually develop practical teaching skills and confidently apply cinematic materials in modern English language classrooms.
